At 400 hundred pages, BB and the Baller may be long but it feels natural, as does the slowly blossoming relationship between a bookish history professor and a professional basketball star.Joshua Weathers (called Newt by his teammates and the fans) wants to complete his college education but doesn't want to deal with the notoriety his presence on a big campus would generate. He finds the perfect school up in Denton Harbor, WA--small enough and out of the way enough not to attract attention. What he ends up finding is a dynamic and beautiful college professor whose obvious love of teaching attracts him in a fundamental way.
Sara Mosby has no time for athletes. She finds them spoiled and obnoxious and hates the way they're often catered to by the faculty. She loves teaching, and though she's tough, the students love her and her courses are some of the most popular. Unfortunately, she's discovered the down side of a professor's life--seeking tenure--which requires the kind of politics and assertiveness she's just not into. Her nemesis, Dr. Marsden, is determined to do all he can to send the popular instructor packing.
The relationship between Josh and Sara has its bumps and bruises along the way. Josh can't seem to find the right time to tell Sara what he really does for a living, since she has made it quite clear that she doesn't like sports nor athletes. When it all comes out in the wash, she's upset, but then comes to realize that Josh is nothing like the self-centered jocks she's had to deal with in the past. However, Sara's not quite ready for prime time either, and the notoriety of being "Newt's Lady" would further complicate her quest for tenure even more. Still, love will not be denied and Josh is the missing piece of her heart.
Race comes up maybe once or twice, but in a more offhanded manner, rather than the focal point. Sara's problem with Josh is his fame, not his color.
BB and the Baller takes place in the Pacific Northwest--namely Seattle and its environs. Most IR's tend to be set in the South (with its attendant issues) or the midwest. Few are set on the West Coast, where attitudes about interracial dating and/or marriage aren't quite so loaded. Also, Sara as a more book-smart heroine is a refreshing change from the often sassy type, though she's definitely no shrinking violet when it's crunch time. She has her moments where I wanted to shake her for being so stubborn. And what can I say about Josh? The ultimate beta male who can Iverson on court and off when it comes to the woman who's stolen his heart...BIG sigh! This is a sweet and passionate romance for those looking for something fresh in the IR genre. Normally, I'm a spicy-type romance kind of girl, but BB and the Baller was a wonderful read.

There are some stories that stay with me forever and this is one of them!!!! I loved this story! Now it wasn't your typical hot and heavy, sex against the wall, sweep you off your feet type of romance; however, that's what I loved about it. Honestly, there are times when I get tired of reading about the hero showering the heroine with all kinds of over the top gifts or the couple having hot, heavy, toes curling, mind blowing sex five times in one night. There are just times when I just want a realistic, sweet, thoughtful romance story and this was definitely it!! This story had substance, the characters had depth, it had a great story line and even a little bit of mystery. I loved how this couple met, I loved how they took things slow and got to know each other, I loved how the hero courted her (no pun intend), I loved how they respected one another and how they were so honest about their feelings! No, the sex scene wasn't all hot and heavy, but it was reflective of who this couple was and that's what made it all the more passionate! For me, it was such a sweet, wonderful story and this couple is still one of my all time favorites!
I agree with many of the positive reviews previously posted and I totally agree it was way too long. It's a strange comment for me to make about a book, since length of a title usually isn't an issue with me. However, in this instance, I did find myself skimming pages just to get to more of the substance of the plot.
A short synopsis of the book is this set in the Pacific Northwest, we meet African American professor Sara Mosby, PhD who teaches history at a small university. She is a petite, avowed bookworm who is a demanding and inspiring teacher. She is currently embroiled in a tenure fight against her department chair who is angling to deny her tenure and/or get her fired. The male protagonist is Joshua "Newt" Newton, a white NBA player in the twilight of his career. He still has skills and brings a level of maturity to the expansion team--Chinooks. He is extremely intelligent and as a man who realizes that soon his career, he decides to resume his education but away from the spotlight of Seattle, where the Chinooks are playing. While visiting Sara's campus, he overhears a lecture that Sara is giving and is captivated by the subject matter, her lecture & teaching style and ultimately her. Since she doesn't follow sports and has a low opinion of athletes in general (the readers find out why during the course of the book), she doesn't know who he is and he doesn't tell her. Thus the story begins...
Pros Likable and well developed characters, well written (no grammar, spelling errors here - Thank G-D!!), there were strong, supportive friendships for both characters which added richly to the story. The racial differences were acknowledged but didn't dominate the story.
Cons Female protagonist's naiveté. There was way too long of a build-up for the two characters to connect. I'm all for a realistic portrayal of a courtship but it is 100 pages before they date and then page 266/348 before they take their relationship to the next level. Yeah, I kept count! LOL!! Is this a romance novel, really?!
Bottom line recommend with reservations.
