Plague of Memory A Stardoc Novel S L Viehl Books

I have to explain the depth of my disappointment -- I HATE reading first person novels. Even so, I read the first Stardoc and was hooked. Viehl's Stardoc novels are the only first person books I have completed and I surprised myself by buying more in the series. So you can imagine how disappointed I am to see that Jarn lives on. While I enjoyed the third person format of Rebel Ice, I did not like the characters (Reever is always the exception). Jarn especially is as obnoxious as other reviewers have painted her -- vicious, stubborn, subservient, stupid, cold, unemotional, and withdrawn. Cherijo was obnoxious as well -- stubborn, know-it-all, selfish, and holier-than-thou. But at least with Cherijo, there was some evidence that she could grow as a character. The only growth with Jarn is when she regains some of Cherijo's memories. The love scenes between Reever and Jarn are mechanical and cold -- there is simply no emotion in that character and her "love" for her daughter doesn't seem to be anything more than her duty as a mother. A plea to the author -- kill off Jarn and bring Cherijo back. Please, or I may have to say goodbye to the series.

Plague of Memory A Stardoc Novel S L Viehl Books Reviews

Let me preface this by saying that I am a big fan of SL Viehl's science fiction books. I've bought them all, even the hardcover non-Stardoc ones. I liked Cherijo a lot, and enjoyed the first five books of the series.

And all I can say is, what happened?

Summary we rejoin Jarn as she struggles to cope with living on the Joren ship with Reever and Marel and everyone who "wants her to be someone she's not". Then a plague erupts on the Hsktskt homeworld and they want Cherijo. Well, of course Jarn goes. Complications (quite contrived--esp appearance of the look-a-like) ensue and 'adventure'...

I'm sorry, but what is the logic of, as an author, taking the character that your readers (and you, yourself) have invested so many books and pages in, and erasing her completely? NOT only that, but then creating such a negative picture of her?

If you haven't read this book yet, I would say measure the decision to carefully. If you are a normal reader--i.e. get connected to the main character, you might be dissapointed. Viehl not only doesn't bring Cherijo back, but she writes a revisionist perspective of Cherijo that will ruin--or at least negatively affect your re-readings of the earlier books. They will for me. You get a side of Duncan never really alluded to in earlier books and a really negative portrayal of their relationship.

Sorry if I sound close-minded, but I LIKED Cherijo. I liked the space doctor. Jarn is... not interesting. But hey, I liked knowing more about Squilyp's mate
Akkabarr the ice planet. She has endured a lot since his crash there. Now at Jorenian spacecraft Sunlace everything is unfamiliar. She is Jarn, not Cherijo, and nobody understands that. Not his telepath husband Duncan Reever, not captain Xonea of her Torin clan, not ship's Senior Healer Squilyp of Omorr. She's got those sharp daggers and she will kill anybody who threatens her daughter's life in the ship. She has no desire to regain the memories of this former Cherijo everyone cherish and value highly. A plague is raging to lead extinction at reptilian Hsktskt planed Vtaga. Race that once enslaved her. In an ultimatum Dr. Cherijo, her former self, is required to find a cure or else the galaxy will have final war, not like anything ever seen. If the Hsktskt were to die, so will the whole galaxy.

In the previous book 6 Rebel Ice we experienced a ship wreck and the series of following life of Cherijo was in essence discontinued. The amnesiac Cherijo was taken over by personality developed during her stay on an ice planet. This is the life of Jarn of Akkabarr with equal medical skills. We get to experience how she must cope with the situations where everyone expects her to behave like her former self. Unemotional Duncan longs her old sweetheart and refuses to acknowledge this person who considers herself inferior to the male gender, ready to please and predatorial towards any threatening person on the ship. She makes everybody, even Jorenians, nervous. Attempts to revive her latent memories by the ship's senior healer are not making progress. Meeting the Hsktskt brings back figures like war lord TssVar whose child she delivered (book 1 Stardoc) but who put her in slavery (book 3 Endurance) and her torturer SrrokVar (book 3 Endurance). One of the TssVar's child, ChoVa, who took career on medicine, is helping to resolve the plague outbreak with Jarn. A homoerotic scandal between a Jorenian and winged Hawk (book 4 Shockball) is also introduced. Sugars at the bottom are reincarnated genetically altered Kao Torin (book 1 Stardoc) and Jarn's mother, Jxian Maggie, who reveals thousand year plan of a black crystal menace that could destroy the entire galaxy.

Two (2) stars. Written in 2007 this is the book 7 in the stardoc series that follows life of female Dr Cherijo Torin, the genetic experiment and clone manufactured by his Father. Only that the lead figure is no longer Cherijo but taken over another personality called Jarn. Five books have introduced readers to follow life of humorous Dr. Healer. A little emotional but always sharp to get into trouble; making her own heads forward. And now we have a new character Jarn in her place. This permanent decision will not please readers invested in following Cherijo's, not Jarn's, life. The 180 degree turn in style -- subservient, ready to surrender completely to Duncan and so forth -- is distressing. The reintroduction of former figures (lover Kao Torin, SrrokVar), reunion with old enemy Hsktskt, two-men-in-affection scene, feel like nostalgic trip to the past. Like a get together or a farewell to celebrate former life of Cherijo. Those who have emotionally invested to the series will be displeased of this new direction. The strong female series has ended and another has begun with a male controlled tone. Writers do not always do as we expect, so the decision to change the character may pay off in books to follow. The readers are reminded by her alien mother Maggie that Cherijo/Jarn has a bigger destiny awaiting her. The nostalgic tone eventually makes the story confounding and garbling read.
