Magic America is an enchanting dance between real and surreal, with characters you want to find waiting for you every day on your front steps. It’s a wonderful demonstration of how everyone’s broken in some way, and that getting healed or fixed often just means borrowing what you need from others who aren’t broken in quite the same way. I thoroughly enjoyed C.E. Medford’s writing and especially the way she is able to capture, in a single sentence, the width and depth of a moment, whether somber or comical. For example, it never occurred to me that a pit-bull could have a bad day.Tags : Magic America: Coming of Age in an Altered State [C.E. Medford] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Magic America was a very enjoyable read! Wish I could have made it last longer. Just couldn't wait to see what would happen. Will definitely recommend to friends! Looking forward to the next one.
A well written book! Loved the diversity of characters that entered Hope's life, real and imaginary. Journeying with her as she bloomed where she was planted, in an environment not of her making. A reprehensible chemical manufacturer, and life's dysfunctions. C.E.Medford, brought a richness of love and friendship, mingled with every conceivable emotion to the pages of this book. A page turner, I would recommend it, and I'm looking forward to what this author has in store next.
With the soft edges and ethereal transitions, reality melts away and the reader finds themselves exploring Magic America alongside of Hope. There is a poetic flavor to Magic America that breathes life into every exchange and weaves a thread between the characters that leaves us longing for friends like Rooster and Freak Eddie. With a final sentence Magic America does the impossible and wraps a bow not only around Magic America but around the story of our lives. C.E. Medford is the new Neil Gaiman.
An old saying goes that easy reading is hard writing. If that is true then writing this must have been really hard. The story flows and doesn't ever make you question the magic that underpins the plot. Ivka is real to the reader whether anyone else in the story sees her or not. The political subplot is very timely to our real world as environmental regulations are rolled back or removed. A great read and hard to put down once you start reading. I always think a great book is one you don't want to end and I was sorry to see this one come to a close.
I live and work as a middlle/high school teacher in Beijing, China. I ordered this book for my students as we do a unit on climate change and pollution. This novel fit perfectly with our studies. It has a great plot and characters and some intrigue and suspense. Touches on many adolescent issues and is an easy read--a page-turner for sure. Really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, there was a problem with my order of print copies so the kids never got theirs. Not anyone's fault but mine; I just didn't catch it in time. We'll order it next year for sure though. My students were really disappointed! Just sorry I couldn't contribute to the author's success!
Magic America was a great read and I had trouble putting it down. Having grown up in the area, I loved all the references to places both familiar and dear. I loved C.E.'s twist on New Jersey, it made me look at these places with a different viewpoint, Hope was a wonderfully written character, one that makes the reader root for her from page 1. I truly hope there is a second book, and I am confident that C.E. will continue have a strong following. Definitely a writer to watch!
I chose this book as one of the choices for a unit about the American Dream for my high school students. I was pleasantly surprised when a boy who kept telling me he did not like to read, or talk in class for that matter, explained to the entire class that he had no idea a book like this existed. He was able to explain the plot, the characters, and recommend it to fellow students. I'm thrilled that C.E. Medford wrote this book. I enjoyed it, and cannot describe how much I enjoyed the discussion with my one particular student who finally found the right book!
