I read and reviewed Deception Peak this fall and knew this mini epic adventure was going to be a huge hit. Dianne Gardner weaves a world of good and bad, light and dark, hope and despair. When we left Ian at the end of Deception Peak, he was an angry scared young man just beginning his career in high school. Now he is a headstrong independent 18 year-old who has a mind of his own. With his father still lost in the Realm and Ian facing with a future facing two different directions. Struggling with all the questions a normal high school graduate faces, the loss of his father still left unanswered and the prophecy of Ian being the savior of the Realm, plus a dragon to face down... is Ian ready and mature enough to handle this all? Should he click the control and deal with the unfinished business in the Realm or should he pursue a career utilizing his artistic and graphic art talents.
As with the first in the series this book quickly drew me in and felt all the hurt, the frustration and confusion Ian felt. Dianne has a very poignant style of writing which allows you to lose yourself in the Realm along with Ian. I would love to see this adapted into a movie adventure! (I am sure Dianne would too, but seriously this is a wonderful story and I would love to see this on the big screen! I can see Ian on the back of Sparkle now, galloping through the grasslands and along the shore. It is a wonderful read! I loved how she is able to get not only into the head of a 18-year-old but also express the emotional responses of the father as well as the 18 year-old, Abbi whom he has lived with and is one of the only ones who knows his secret.
I recommend this for all your Harry Potter and fantasy adventures readers in your household. They will adore this series! It is an approved family read because the nature of the read is not only enjoyable to adults (hey I am a tough sell) but it deals with many issues and lessons that the middle age school child needs to learn. Issues such as honor, integrity respect and above all honesty. It also shows how loss can affect a child. As an adult it is good to see this perspective to help us understand and help them get through this. It is interesting to see from both Ian and his father's eyes see how children deal with situations and loss differently. This is the one thing that really makes this a five-star book, Dianne's ability to show so many different takes on things. It is pretty hard for a book to teach a lesson to both a child and an adult, and this one will. So grab it and read it with the child who is fighting dark elves and evil orcs in the backyard and share an adventure together!

The Dragon Shield Dianne Lynn Gardner 9780615760452 Books Reviews
My Review
WOW is the one word I will use to start this review. My first gut feeling and my last gut feeling is this is going to be and IS an AMAZING book! Then to know that it is not the last one is even more thrilling and awesome to say the least for me! I was totally entralled within the pages of Ian's story.
Author Dianne Lynn Gardner's writing style is one that is grabs you and litterally pulls you right in at the beginning and does not let you go at the end. You know what I mean? When you can sink your teeth into a story and instead of just reading line by line or chapter by chapter, you are sitting, standing, crying, laughing, SCREAMING, shaking your fist, praying for the characters, (yea, I said praying) sleeping and dreaming that you are living the part of one of the people with in the book, type of writing. What more could I say, she is on my best author list for sure.
Now for the characters, I am not and yes I said not going to take each one and tell you about them. I will say that Ian is so real to the synopsis and picture that he can be. He is a boy, young man that has struggles that would not just be so plauseable in the real world but takes his life into a realm that you think he will not survive. But even thou author Dianne Lynn Gardner takes Ian into that type of world, you can and will loose yourself into that realm yourself.
What an exciting book, can not wait to sink myself into the next one. A far out way to start my year off with this saga.
As you all know I do not get into to the story, but I recommend this book to all young adult and older to grab this saga up and hold on to the books for your younger ones to grow into them. It will be one saga that you will want to pass on to your younger readers in their time.
So due to the above, I am giving this book a Breath of Life ratings of
Five Clock Rating!!!
Disclosure I did receive this book for my honest opinion and review. But the opinions are my own and yours may differ.
Not knowing about this was book 2 of a series, it took me a little bit to get my arms around what was going on, but I will say this is a great fantasy read. The book starts off at a gallop (pun intended) and never really slows down. It reads like a YA book should, quick, fun, imaginative and teenage-ish. I thought it had some good moral themes standing for what you believe in, the value of the truth, awkwardness of being a teen boy trying to understand a teen girl. I have a niece who is turning 12 and I will be purchasing this book series for her upcoming birthday, she will LOVE it!!
Please buy this book, it will not disappoint.
A friend recommend the first book Deception Peak. I had never read this genre of book before. I could not put it down so you can imagine my excitement when the second book The Dragon Shield hit the shelves. I enjoyed this book, but I did think the first book was better. The second book lack the unique imagination that was on every single page of the first book. I am a fan of Dianne Gardner and can't wait for the third book and many more to come. I follow Dianne on Facebook and I am backer of the Ian's Realm saga (check out Kickstarter) Thank you Dianne for introducing me to adventure, fantasy, and portals. Thank you Melba for recommending this book. I didn't know what I missing.
