I loved Shadows on the Moon - a fantasy retelling of Cinderella by Zoe Marriott, so I was really looking forward to getting into this urban fantasy tell with Japanese mythology. I didn't enjoy this book as much as Shadows on the Moon but this was still a great read!

This book has excellent world-building - I love the interweaving of Japanese culture with modern London and the parallel world with the Kitsune. It's a bit dark and bloody, but it captured both cultures so well I think. And the mystery behind the blade - the katana - is so intriguing as well. There's still more of the blade's story to reveal, but I liked that the katana has it's own agenda that is very mysterious. I think that sets up the main conflict of the book very well - I really want to know more.

I was very disappointed by the romance - there's an instalove aspect of it that does have a good reason, but the level of devotion so soon was really too much at times and just not that believable to me. I wish Mio was more level-headed in this aspect even if the object of her affection is a very nice and supportive romance lead. The friendship between Mio and Jack made up for this though, because I loved their banter and camaraderie! They were so fun together and I was so happy that Mio didn't forget about Jack once the strange things started happening to her. There's not enough great friendships in the YA books I read and I really love it when I come across one that feels believable and gives the main character a great person to bounce ideas off of.

There are many interesting elements to this book - it felt like a whirlwind of a story often with all the things that were after Mio and the katana and I think this is a great start to the series. The ending was particularly exciting - well there was one part that didn't feel believable, but I really have high hopes for this series!

When she was nine years old, Mio Yamato’s grandfather showed her an ancient katana hidden in the family attic and told her that it must remain hidden. Despite his warning, when she’s fifteen Mio decides that the sword will make the perfect accessory for a costume party. Now the reappearance of the sword has wakened a creature from Japanese legend, who’s stalking Mio through the modern day streets of London.

There wasn’t anything that was completely horrible about The Night Itself, but there wasn’t anything that went beyond mediocre either. Besides the use of Japanese mythology, the story feels essentially familiar. There’s nothing about it that feels new or interesting, not even the use of mythology which is it’s one distinguishing factor. The main character’s got a special birthright of which she’s unaware, there’s a special object she’s got to keep away from the evil villains, and there’s a hot sort of super natural guy who she falls into instalove with despite knowing him less than twenty four hours. Whatever. I’ve seen all of this before.

None of the characters felt developed. I never got much of a sense of their personalities, and now, a week later I’ve almost completely forgotten them. They all felt like generic YA stock tropes. I was interested in Jack, the lesbian best friend, initially, but my interest in her had flagged by the second half of the book. Basically the book introduced a supernatural guy with a crush on her who kisses her, and the book doesn’t discuss it. So annoying.

It’s really hard to find much to say about The Night Itself beyond “mediocre.” The writing wasn’t terrible. Even the instalove thing could have been more annoying than it turned out being. It did help me pass some hours when the wifi was out, so there’s that in it’s favor. But it’s not a book that I care about or would recommend.
The description of this book intrigued me but I wasn't sure what to expect. Right from the beginning I knew I was going to love this book. Great characters and action. Highly recommended.

The plot of this book is compelling and fascinating, and the writing just as good, but what really made this book for me was the characters. From Mio, the vulnerable, brave, refreshingly normal heroine to Jack, the witty, tough, loyal best friend to Shinobu, the strong, honorable, lonely hero, these characters are ones that will jump off the page and cause you to fall in love with them. Well-written, complex female friendships, a swoon-worthy romance, and some badass fight scenes make this book the marvel that it is. I can't wait to see what lies in store for these characters in book two!
